Mare Barrow is a Red living with her parents and a younger sister, Gisa. Norta is currently ruled by King Tiberias Calore VI, one of many "Silver" citizens, whose silver blood and supernatural powers allow them to rule over the more numerous yet powerless red blooded population.

Mare is jealous of Gisa because her skills in sewing earned her a job working for Silvers, and Reds who have jobs don't have to conscript in the war. When Mare learns that Kilorn Warren, her best friend, will be conscripted, she plans an escape and meets with a colleague who directs her to Farley, a captain of the Scarlet Guard, insurgents composed of Reds who want to bring equality between their people and the Silvers. Farley demands an exorbitant sum of money in exchange for Kilorn's escape.

Mare's plan to steal from a Silver with Gisa goes horribly wrong when live news reports that the Scarlet Guard bombed Silver buildings, inciting Silvers around them to grow violent. Gisa's hand is broken in the chaos, forcing her to quit her job and stop supporting Mare's family, whilst diminishing Gisa's dreams of becoming a seamstress. Unable to bear the guilt she feels towards Gisa and her family, Mare goes to a tavern and began stealing from random people to occupy her thoughts.

While there, she gets sloppy and is caught while attempting to steal from a boy. Surprisingly, instead of turning her in he gives her money. He informs her that his name is Cal and he works as a servant at the palace. He walks her home and listens as she informs him of her tragic life.

He gives her another coin out of pity and leaves. The next day, Mare is taken to the king's local residence and given a job as a servant. During the Queenstrial, where Silver nobility compete for Cal's hand in marriage, Mare accidentally displays electrokinetic powers against Cal's eventual bride, Evangeline Samos. She is captured, but because the king fears of an uprising should a Red be discovered to have supernatural powers, Mare is made a bride of Tiberias' second son, the shy Maven, given the name Mareena Titanos, and a cover story: the daughter of a Silver general who died on the battle field and was adopted by the Reds in the war zone.

Mare feels torn as she realizes she is in love with Cal, her betrothed's brother and the future Silver king. However, she soon grows to develop feelings for Maven instead. Suddenly having to live as a noble within the king's ranks, Mare slowly acquaints herself with Maven and Cal while also befriending Julian Jacos, Cal's uncle and a librarian who teaches her how to control her powers.

Mare is permitted to say goodbye to her family by Cal and learns the return of her brothers Bree and Tramy, but not Shade, who was beheaded by Silver officers for reported desertion. It is a story about Mare, who is a Red, and her struggles when she is elevated to the position of faux-Silver.

In binary terms, a Red is someone without magical powers, a class of downtrodden by the magical Silvers. But Mare stays true to her red blood: cue rebellion, revolution, and all sorts of fun. One of my favourite things about this book is the environment in which it is set. At times though, we are sent spinning by the existence of TV screens, security cameras, and other modern devices.

Some of the ideas are brilliant, and I enjoyed my time in this fantasy world greatly. It is written in fist-person which is not my favourite , but it is done pretty well and I enjoyed the story nonetheless. Mare is an easy-to-get-on-with lead character, and she is supported by a great cast of other characters too.

All in all, a really comfortable read. But comfortable does not imply leisurely. Oh no. This is a well-paced novel with twists and turns coming in all the right places. The ending in particular is very nice, with a great warping of events, and some really emotive scenes.

This is nicely setup for the rest of the series. Well, the use of first-person was quite annoying personally speaking. I think there are a few things about first person that are frustrating, the worst being that it is sometimes hard to catch where an inner-monologue ends and where speech starts. The other thing that first-person does is to lend itself to more substantial inner-dialogue, and this can get a bit cumbersome at times. Overall this book certainly works, but I would personally have preferred a different perspective.

And finally, some of the revolutionary planning that is cooked up is wildly juvenile. To pin a plan of that size on an act which is so volatile is surely crazy, and that fact is catching.

Hopefully Mare learns from that fanciful mistake. It has all the right ingredients and is well executed, with flashes of beauty. Product: The book was Brand New and had no damages on cover and Pages. Review: The story is set in a fictional world, The Kingdom Of Norta where two types of people live, People with Silver Blood these people have special abilities like controlling water or metal etc and People with Red Blood these people have no special abilities and are treated as slaves by the silver blood.

But she does not know that she posses a deadly talent of her own that could change the entire situation. Now Mare has a chance to demolish the empire from within and to end this all but this is not so easy as her own life is at stake.

At what lenght is Mare willing to go to end this. The premise is great and the book starts well, a mixture of underdog grit and determination, classist privilege vs disadvantage of low birth combined with fish-out-of-water wonder for the main character. The silver abilities are sometimes cliche but there are a few gems thrown in and this makes for some exciting battles and has a dark, Hunger Games feel in the early chapters.

Unfortunately though the story descends into tedious and often quite dull planning and politics without a great deal of action or danger. The fantastical, bombastic, potentially exciting abilities of the characters are often ignored in favour of plain dialogue. Some plot points are rather farfetched for a fantasy novel, esepcially the inconsistent use of technology. At attempt at a quasi-technological, quasi-medieval post-apocalyptic society of class systems but without the infrastructure or a solid history to back it up.

Our main character never truly feels in danger of, well, anything, so it's difficult to root for her safety and survival as it's more or less expected by the next chapter. She feels more like an observer to her own fate than an active participant and as a reader-surrogate there isnt enligh focus on how this feels and makes her feel see: the Power by Naomi Alderman for stellar writing on a similar ability.

The love triangle is boring and frustrating, most of the time wondering why our heroine has been written to fawn over certain lazily-written characters who are at best irritatingly privileged and at worst complicit in her family's devastation. Entertaining but forgettable. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Make Money with Us.

Amazon Payment Products. Let Us Help You. Amazon Music Stream millions of songs. Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers. Amazon Drive Cloud storage from Amazon. She was a very compelling villain with layers, which surprised me in a book that was purely black-and-white.

I sympathized with her sometimes, at least more than I did with Horse. But, for the most part, this was the same old thing that's been churning out of the YA Machines since the year We both hated it.

Good lord in heaven! This book should carry one of those labels. It's not that it's bad. Look, I'm trying to be diplomatic.

This book was bad, but it's not the sort of thing that, if you're interested, you shouldn't read. There were some pretty co Good lord in heaven! There were some pretty cool scenes One cool scene. It was daringly gory and very deftly written. Oftentimes I find that fight scenes are written in such a way that the author knows what's going on, but nobody else does.

Here, everything is pretty easy to visualize. But the problem is that this book is just a great big patchwork of a thousand other YA sci-fi dystopia melodramas that I really couldn't care less about. It's nothing special, the characters are nothing special, the plot is laughably simplistic. Even the twist was visible from a mile off, because of course that character that everyone has been side-eyeing for the last three hundred pages is evil.

Of course the character that the heroine tries the hardest to convince herself is good people is bad people. But it's so cringey, like making small talk with the hairdresser. Here's this incredibly boring girl, Alina Starkov, who gets taken to the Capitol when her Grisha powers emerge in dire straits!

Cersei Lannister engages Alina in a battle of wills view spoiler [and shit hits the fan when she orchestrates the killing of Robert Baratheon so Joffrey can take the throne even though it rightfully belongs to Mal. I'm not entirely sure if Cal is Mal well, they got the names right but he's that sort of jerk that you can tell the author likes but who left me colder than a chest freezer. He could have been spaghettified by a stellar black hole and crushed into unobservable matter in the singularity and I wouldn't have given a rat's ass either way.

Water is a conductor, and if Evangeline is hurling metal at Mare's head, a wall of electricity isn't going to stop it. I guess you could say that if Evangeline's power is to create magnetic fields, then Mare's lightning interfered with that, but that's really clutching at straws and there's no evidence that simply applying a shock of current to a magnetic field will block it.

In fact, hardly anything can block a magnetic field; it's a powerful force. Can Mare create forcefields? That's never really solidified. Even the Rise, red as the dawn thing that was clearly a marketing tool falls flat. I've said this before and I'll say it again: you can develop your protagonist until you're blue in the face, but a story is nothing without a supporting cast. World building is nothing without decent supporting characters.

I knew this book and I would have a hard time getting along when I realized it was written in exhausting, unfunny "snarky" first person, but look at the world Suzanne Collins managed to built through the eyes of one character.

In terms of the world building, there is none. If world building were food, this book would be starving. There's this glassy castle and a smoky district and then the nasty Stilts, but it's so skimpy, guys. There's no depth to it at all. And this book tries to do the biopunk thing with the silver blood and the inherited powers but it's all just drugs and magnets, isn't it? The fact that anybody believes the ruse around Mare is proof that these people might be powerful, but there's nothing but cobwebs between their ears.

Red Queen was not a letdown for me, though. I didn't have high hopes to begin with, so I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I suppose that's the best outcome from all of this: I gained and lost nothing. View all 43 comments. Estella Lol the physics parts was spot on. Hilarious and insightful review yet again!

This review might be mildly spoilerish. I'm sort of sorry because I know if I read this book 5 or 6 years ago I would have loved it.

I really wish this was published earlier and I also had time to read it right after it was published. I'm mostly annoyed by it. Maybe because I wish I was stuck in time so I could still enjoy these? But I'm also a bit proud that I finally finished this one. Also, this book just reminds me of too many other books. Selection the marry the prince part , Divergent This review might be mildly spoilerish. Selection the marry the prince part , Divergent the having oh-so-secret and so-dangerous powers that will help to tear the system down and also will be the same, I am the only one with these powers, and then you have this power, you have this power, and maybe everyone will have this power.

Also Kilorn really reminds me of Hurricane. And probably more but I think this list is enough to make the image. Makes no sense and it's annoying, honestly. I started it in August ! Main problem? I don't like Mare, at all. I could not get to like her. She just does not have any main character spark for me.

And I am really sorry to say this, but pretty often she even came off as absolutely clueless or even dumb. From the start, she hates Silvers because they are just monsters, mean etc. But then she meets Cal, knows nothing about him but tells him everything! She trusts him for no real reason. And she was warned several times that anyone could betray anyone.

Then she got into the whole mess. She hates the Silvers who are so mean. But suddenly she likes Maven. She trusts him. Like, why?

She knows him and Cal for that matter for a couple of days. After a lifetime of hating Silvers or even being afraid of them, she just trusts them. Because she is a brand new, technically powerful player in the arena and of course everyone would love to have on their side.

Then she thinks she could just sneak around, using her powers and no one would ever think about it. Like: "You know, all these cameras suddenly turning off, do you maybe think that it could be that girl that can control electricity? Just maybe? Then, I don't like Cal. Because he is just a little mister perfect. There is nothing about him.

How did it happen? There was nothing. No reason for those two to have feelings for each other. There was almost no interaction between them except for small episodes. There must be another way. Same with taunting view spoiler [Maven hide spoiler ] making it like he is weak to refuse to battle with him. There is no weakness in knowing you are weaker and not able to win against someone in fair battle or on their terms. That would not be brave that would be stupid!

You fight to win, not to present the best battle possible and let the best fighter win. I was not sure about Maven. Cause he seemed, boring? And suspicious. However, I wonder. Mare said that he instantly changed, his behaviour, the way he speaks etc. So the question is, did he pretend to be a good guy just for Mare or long before her? Because if A, then his sudden change would have been suspicious to everyone else around. Including Cal. If B then why? That makes no sense!

If you're there to guard someone you just don't forget about it cause it's new to you. It looks like I even have problems writing this review.

I have so much to say that I keep forgetting. Also, it seems to have every trope imaginable. Cause a villain cannot be brave! So, what I liked? I liked Evangeline and Ptolemus. So, I am not sure if I will read it.

View all 44 comments. I know alot of people love this and I can see why but for me it just wasn't working. I just, no thanks. And I am sad because I thought the premise was cool and then All the characters seemed cliche and tropey and plain.

Mare was just so boring and stupid and I could not believe she actually managed to survive that. I think she's supposed to be "the next Katniss" but it's like.. Mare wouldn't have survived the hunger games is all I'm saying. She was just silly and boring and exhausting I honestly rolled my eyes at her like every 5 pages. Also, fake action girl. Which I hate. Don't tell me your protag.

I don't know I just feel like I've read about them in other books before a hundred times. They're just all cookie cutter characters who don't bring anything new to the table. Granted, the "twist" at the end was kind of nice but still I honesty didn't even care about the betrayal or anything because I was just felt nothing for any of them.

It was like, yes all the Red's are starving, dying in the streets and in war but listen!! Silvers don't get to choose who they marry so tragic lets talk about that. The plot was very predictable and I didn't feel like anything actually happened. It was very classic dystopian and YA and followed a series of events I've seen before. The beginning was bad with me honestly thinking of quitting for the first pages. After that it gets better and the whole but around is pretty good mostly the bit in the ball but it's still kind of weird pacing there are TWO climaxes in this and it feels so unnatural because there's a climax and then pages of nothing right in the middle before the next one??

The actual premise was quite cool with the fractions in society along blood lines, and with the "silverbloods" having powers but I didn't feel there was enough worldbuilding. There was literally no history to the world or characters to that matter and I wish there was because there was no explainable reason for how this cycle of abuse towards reds even began. The whole world is underpinned by this war going on but the origins of the war and why anyone should care is never properly explained either.

It's so frustrating. The magic system was alright, but again needed more explaining and expansion. Ok now onto the romance. Do I care? Absolutely not. BUt seriously, there was so much pointless and annoying romance in this and then the end basically boiled down to her being like I choose no one because she's so dramatic and it's like?? I think we're supposed to be proud of her but it's literally irrelevant at that point and also??

Like I?? It was just a mESS urgh. I mean, it could have been better if it weren't for all the annoying, ridiculous tropes, cookie-cutter and boring characters, weird paced plot and poor worldbuilding.

Anyway, I might think about book 2 but probably not for a while. I am so meh about this at least it was short and didn't take long. This is accurate. View all 23 comments. A lot of people were mentioning that this was like a lot of different dystopian books and while I agree, I still think this is worth the read. I enjoyed the world, the magic system I definitely saw parts of the ending coming but it was still entertaining!

Will be continuing the series! View all 7 comments. Feb 23, jessica rated it really liked it. Jul 30, Mohammed Arabey rated it liked it. What really bugs me here was the many Deja vu s from HG and Divergent since I didn't like the latter's plot much. But let's see step by step with The Red.. The Elite push the low class citizens into Poverty.. And to kill any think of a rebellion ,they're watching Everyone, even -specifically- those closed to the king in the Palace.

The workers always paid low of course, and there's this part of Norta -this district- where just factories and technology workers, it's very polluted that skies are dark with smoke , the people in this district can never see the sun.. To show how powerful the 'Elite' are , just to erase any rebellion ideas, every first Friday the low class are forced to gather and witness dangerous arena fighting between two of the elite Silver blood They're all Elite , yes..

Every House has certain 2 colours or more, used for costumes.. There's a big party for the King's son,the Prince.. And every girl show the power of her house.. What's really bugged me here that it supposed to be modern, in the future The Heir to the Throne.. And only when he helped her to work at the Palace as a servant, and while the Game of the candidates princesses and future Queen is on, a huge revelation about Mare is just Out She has Power..

She can control Electricity, and even more powerful than the Silvers She's the Little Lighting Girl.. And by the story goes, you'll see how it like Divergents in the Divergent series, tracking and hunting them down But with a new story of Love, some of it totally unconvincing. And a new Betrayal story that's totally very good written, although a bit predictable for me.. So now you know all the basic story line.. Can't say I didn't like it I did since I love most of the elements , but the mix was confusing me a lot with the style of old kings era and the new tech.

The rest of the characters were ranged from very good to very shallow or just similar to other characters of the previous 5 major novels.. I liked Maven , he's very well written, Cal was perfect most of the times too The Old master Julian and his back story was good to although remind me of The Giver's master Also I wished to shed more light into the world before Will wait for the next part..

I really hope it'd be better and more original PS: A big respect to the author for her 'Aknowledgement' part where she mentioned many authors, Directors and Screenwriters that inspired her.. Rowling and George R. Mohammed Arabey From 1 Aug. View all 31 comments. Yet another morally ambiguous character and I am sold. Red Queen took the best elements from all our favourites and our not so much tales and smushed them into one phenomenal book with an equally addictive storyline.

Yes, this is indeed an Xmen high fantasy and yes, my heart did stop. Aveyard has ticked all the right boxes for me. Yes, that does sound mildly sarcastic. But you know what? It feels like a genre requirement at this stage and who am I to complain when a hundred and one others do the exact same thing.

Mare Barrow is a highly agile pickpocket. But time is running out. Like her brothers, she sees a future of conscription for herself. Her eighteenth birthday is looming and without a job to pardon her, she is set to enter the frontline.

And it scares her. The thought of war, the thought of leaving her sweet, innocent sister behind, the thought of waving goodbye to her parents, yet another member of the family unable to support them. However as life may have it, her seventeen years of familiar suffering are about to take a different turn.

You see, Mare is discovered to be an impossibility, the secret that could topple an already precarious hierarchy. Society is ruled by the silvers. They are a race seemingly set apart by God. They themselves have usurped the title. As abnormalities defying the mundane genetic makeup, they are creatures to be feared.

You can go either two ways with that—to the ditches or raised up on a throne. The Silvers are blessed with the latter. They are Gods in the arena of life. Destroyed by the greatness of others, losing the battle for our right to exist because we are not special. We did not evolve like them, with powers and strengths beyond our limited imaginations. Reds however bleed red.

They are mortals, cursed to a life of servitude. As a Red with a Silver aptitude, Mare is dropped into a dangerous game. It is a political desire that keeps her alive. While her days are limited to however long she can keep in line, Mare is given a route out of the slums, away from her fate of war.

From there on out, it is a game of chess. A show to keep people happy, quiet, and trampled. Secrets come at a cost. What I adored about Red Queen is the concept. It was delectable. The abilities reminiscent of XMEN add a unique flavour to the mix.

The world building was neither underwhelming, nor overwhelming. Aveyard interweaves all facts and ideas into her intricate world in a fluid manner. We also see elements of The Selection added to the bag, only without the pettiness. The Queenstrial is set in place as a selection process. Only, instead of vying for the Princes attention, it is a little more of a family affair. These Silver women all hail from families equivalent to dukes and duchesses.

The marriage is a means to an end, an cementation of an alliance. And in that arena there is only one thing that prevails: strength. Power and strength are two concepts that could happily marry one another, and in Red Queen, they certainly do.

Look forward to reading the next in the series. Victoria Aveyard did a phenomenal job bringing a fantastical world to kife. I look forward to reading the other novels of this series and her other works.

I would like to thank Victoria Aveyard Guys Red Queen has blown my mind. Victoria Aveyard has created her own unique dystopian world in this book and now I'm kinda AKA extremely obsessed with it.

Straight from the start I was attracted to this novel because it stars a protagonist, Mare Barrow, that isn't the cliche innocent girl placed into a horrid world. She's actually a thief. But she's also a red blood. And in this dystopia reds are servants to the silver bloods who live in luxury while reds live in poverty. The only thing that sepperates the two groups is the fact that only silvers have supernatural abilities.

Except Mare. She's got abilities too. But she's red blood which should make having ablilities impossible. Except she's got them and nobody knows why. This book took me on an adventure. And I loved it. I would like to thank Victoria Aveyard for taking me into this world and allowing me to experience a life so unlike my own. I give this book 5 bookmarks out of 5. Your favourite book addict, Mackenzie Read more reviews at yeswereadbooks.

Whilst the overall concept of this book is exciting and intriguing, the plot and characters both truly let it down. The plot itself, is predictable, slow moving and quite frankly boring, taking a good quarter of the book for anything to actually happen, and the middle of the book being entirely pointless.

The characters on the other hand are even worse. The heroin, Mare, has such a hero complex it is actually painful to read. Not only does she elevate herself above the silvers based on her red blood hypocritical as blood is the reason silvers elevate themselves in the society, and what causes Mare to hate them in the first place but she also appears to think that the entire world revolves around her.

I honestly have not detested a character this much for a very long time - it got to the point that within the second book I was agreeing with the opinions of the characters who are clearly meant to be enemies: Mare is nothing but a brat. The other main characters within this book, of Cal and Maven, are rather likeable in comparison; odd considering Maven reminded me slightly of a young Prince Joffrey from Game of Thrones.

I truly wish there was more character development by both of these, other than the wholly predictable revelation of which brother is good and which is bad. Similarly the plot twist, of which the prior revel concerns, is utterly useless. It was obvious that a certain characters death was meant to be heartbreaking, but quite honestly I was more upset that the author didn't take the time to kill of Mare.

Overall, a good concept, but really not worth the read if you actually want to like any of the characters that you are reading about. I recently received a copy of 'Glass Sword', the second book recently released in this series, and having held onto the first for quite a while I thought it was time to actually get through it.

A lot of people compare it to 'Red Rising' in terms of concept and I can see where these similarities come from. Though more fantastical than sci-fi there are elements of both the very root of the story is the same. Both are stories of a society divided by class and branded by their colour but the similarities end there. I have to say this book is a bit of a slow-starter. It takes quite a while before any of the real action happens and then when it does, there's another long build-up until the next big event.

The second half of the book is much better in terms of adrenaline-pumping action and full of plot twists but you need to make it through the first half first: Aveyard's introduction to the world she is building. She does a good job with bringing everything together and combining what sounds like an almost medieval hierarchy with a very futuristic dose of electricity and technology. Parts of the book felt like the magic was a kind of sorcery while others felt more like a genetic advancement.

My favourite thing that Aveyard got absolutely right was characterisation. It was difficult to know who to trust and who to like, and there is no black and white in Aveyard's world. The big plot twist at the end was pretty unexpected and it's easy to see why there's such a big divide between which characters readers likes. This is all a big misunderstanding, right? This was a promising start to the series, though I'm hoping to dive into the action straight away with the next book!

And what a great first instalment it is, too. At its core, this is a story of discrimination, and the fight of the repressed against their superior magical masters. Our protagonist is thrust into the upper-echelons of society when her unexpected powers materialise, and from there it is a fight to stay alive and to stay true to her roots.

This tale of revolution in a techno-medieval fantasy world is surely a compelling one. The Red Queen positions itself in quite a different groove.

Furious that her favourite brother was killed, Mare joins the Scarlet Guard.

While meeting with Farley to discuss plans, Mare is infuriated when she learns that Kilorn joined, and surprised when she sees that Maven joined as well. This new revelation brings Mare and Maven closer together and they become lovers. The plan involves disrupting a royal ball and killing several important Silvers. However, an unexpected and mysterious bomb goes off, killing many innocents in the process, and also resulting in the capture of Kilorn, Farley, and other members of the Scarlet Guard.

Though the rebels are able to be freed thanks to Julian's help, Mare is alarmed when she learns that Farley was not responsible for the bomb dropped at the palace. The bomb gave Silvers the ability to paint the Scarlet Guard as dangerous murderers to the public. Due to the attack of the Scarlet Guard, the Reds are punished by the Silvers with the lowering of the age of conscription from 18 to Mare herself is ordered to broadcast the new law. Julian confesses that his research concludes that Mare's blood has a genetic mutation, allowing for a person with red blood to have Silver-like powers, and be stronger than both; furthermore, she is not the only one with the mutation.

Shade also had the mutation, which was why he was executed; the only reason Mare was spared was because her powers manifested while she was viewed by many Silver onlookers, thus preventing a cover-up. Julian also mentions that he needs to go into hiding so he leaves Mare a list of names of people like her.

After another meeting with Farley in a free zone that the Silvers have been avoiding, Mare, at Maven's suggestion, infiltrates the king's residence in the capital, Archeon. There, through the underground-roaming Undertrains, the rebels stake an invasion. Mare attempts to convince Cal to allow the Scarlet Guard overtake the castle, and admits to helping them. Cal, stung by her betrayal, refuses and arrests both Mare and Maven, leading them to the castle.

However, once in the presence of Queen Elara and King Tiberius, Queen Elara reveals that she and Maven have been manipulating Mare the whole time in a plot to grant Maven the title of King and murder Cal. Maven hints that he and his mother caused the explosion to paint the Scarlet Guard in a bad light.

Elara then uses her power of mind control to force Cal to kill his father on live television, thus branding him and Mare traitors and allowing Maven to become king. It is also revealed that Elara murdered the King's first wife many years ago in order to become Queen and gain more power. Mare and Cal are sentenced to death and put in an arena with their powers stifled. Mare and Cal battle their former sparring partners, including Evangeline, and manage to kill a few Silvers before they retreat.

They are rescued by the Scarlet Guard and they escape by the Undertrain before Maven can stop them. Inside it, Mare meets with Farley, Kilorn, and, to her shock, Shade, who faked his death and is also a part of the Scarlet Guard. Mare vows to take revenge against Maven, and use the list she acquired from Julian to seek out others like her. Red Queen has been generally well received. The Guardian gave the novel four stars. She breathes new life into her own unique Game of Thrones story enlivened by exciting, character-driven plot twists that have me clamoring for more.

This scintillating tale of betrayals and blood-spattered crowns is not to be missed. It's still a fun read as long as you are not looking for anything with a lot of depth or meaning to it. Kirkus Reviews saw "An inventive, character-driven twist breathes new life into tired fantasy trends. Common Sense Media wrote "With its courageous protagonist, action-packed plot, and romantic possibilities, Red Queen is a winning series start for fantasy and dystopia lovers.
