In addition to the SOI an Empire can send out colony ships to colonise uninhabited planets, and of course send out warships to forcibly take over a planet. Which in turn will defend itself based on its resources and tech levels, potentially halting the empires advance and leaving it open to counter attacks.

Your own planets are also vulnerable and need to be defended at levels you decide, based on local resources and empire funding. To complicate matters further there are competing Empires seeking to also expand their influence and trade and from time to time rogue and unpredictable alien and pirate contacts which can be either of benefit or harm to an Empires plans. Oh and lets not forget the systems which don't get much benefit from being in the empire and rebel.

That is basicially the game, quite simple, quite easy, fairly automated. The player controls the speed of takeover by choosing when, where and what to colonise or conquer based on the resources and strength of their armada's. Higher tech level planets can put up strong resistance but once taken, have expanded SOIs making them prized assets and giving access to tech improvements.

Seeding the occupied galaxy with Jump Gates allows faster movment, while expanding at normal FTL travel speeds to build these gates, creates strategic challenges as players explore and lay claim to new systems. Expansion and growth needs to be tempered with ensuring colonies and gates are protected and usable to eventually control the galaxy, by fair means or foul. I will impliment all of these ideas in my version of Empires and add additional visualisation and some direct command control over the conquest and colonisation elements.

And where possible allow for a more hands on involvement in battle and trading plans. Be a general or a front line soldier, the choice is yours. I can't give you a more detailed plan than that, as I'm going old school and making a lot of it up as I go along when I think up cool ideas that come from the way the code develops.
